The impression that I get

A few mornings ago, I was riding the bus home from a particularly stressful and emotionally draining night at work, and listening to my iPod in the hopes of drowning out everything going on in my head. This song randomly came on, and some of the lyrics have been stuck in my brain for days, so therefore I am going to have to share them with you!

Have you ever been close to tragedy
Or been close to folks who have
Have you ever felt a pain so powerful
So heavy you collapse

No? Well...
I've never had to knock on wood
But I know someone who has
Which makes me wonder if I could
It makes me wonder if
I've never had to knock on wood
And I'm glad I haven't yet
Because I'm sure it isn't good
that's the impression that I get

Have you ever had the odds stacked up so high
You need a strength most don't possess
Or has it ever come down to do or die
You've got to rise above the rest

I've never had to knock on wood
But I know someone who has
Which makes me wonder if I could
It makes me wonder if
I've never had to knock on wood
And I'm glad I haven't yet
Because I'm sure it isn't good
that's the impression that I get

You, I never really understood the chorus of the song. Is it bad to knock on wood? Isn't it really easy? Don't you just find some wood and knock on it?

Or is he trying to say that it's not good to just admit that you need some sort of superstitious activity to make things okay? Maybe he's had the impression that superstition is bad. I don't think it is, though. Superstitions, at least small ones such as knocking on wood, are harmless anyway. At least that's the impression I get!

(I tried to capitalize "I" for emphasis, but it already was...)

I had to comment on Andy's comment haha - I think you can just find some wood - does it matter if it's like.. the fake cardboard that looks like wood? Or do we need actual tree bark. But wait - doesn't paper ultimately come from trees which are made of (shocker) wood! So, theoretically - you could knock on a piece of paper and still be okay.

As to the superstitions part - I have a couple.. at least - I have one about an alarm clock and a certain time(s) at night. Haha - ask Alison (or if this is Alison reading it), ask yourself. haha :)
